Marc-Antoine Goulard
mmmmmmmmis one of the most talented and dedicated painters of his generation. One cannot help think of Nicolas de Stael because of the consuming intensity, but he is not a De Stael imitator; rather, Goulard is someone who is perpetually searching, in an independent and original way, to make what is unprecedented, beautiful, and, thanks to his highly discriminating eye, totally right according to a vision that is his alone.
Goulard invites us into marvelous territory between representation and abstraction, the beauty of landscape and seascape and skies transformed into a universe he has invented. There are paintings where at times one imagines that one is seeing a known subject, but then it evaporates and one is in the realm of pure art, while with other images one begins with complete abstraction and then finds one’s way to nature. Either way, the painting itself is the issue, while one feels the reverence for the earth and its atmosphere: all in a new, marvelous, absorbing realm that Goulard has given us.

mmmmmmmest l’un des peintres les plus talentueux et les plus sérieux de sa génération. On ne peut s’empêcher de penser à Nicolas de Staël à cause de son intensité dévorante, mais il n’en est pas un imitateur ; au contraire, Goulard est quelqu’un qui cherche sans cesse, dans un souci d’indépendance et d’originalité, à faire ce qui n’a jamais été fait, ce qui est beau et, grâce à son œil hautement discriminatoire, tout à fait juste d’après cette vision qui n’appartient à nul autre.
Goulard nous invite dans un territoire merveilleux entre la représentation et l’abstraction, la beauté du paysage et de la mer et des ciels transformés en un univers qu’il a inventé. Parfois, sur certains de ses tableaux, le spectateur croit voir un sujet qui lui est familier, mais qui s’évapore, le plongeant dans un espace d’art pur, alors que d’autres œuvres qui lui semblent au début totalement abstraites lui font retrouver le chemin de la nature. D’une manière ou d’une autre, le tableau lui-même est ce qui compte, tandis que l’on ressent cette révérence pour la terre et son atmosphère: tout cela dans un royaume nouveau, merveilleux et absorbant que nous a donné Goulard.
Il a offert à ces spectateurs ces cadeaux, par son dévouement absolu pour l’acte de peindre, par ses extrêmes capacités techniques alliées à une vision qui cherche sans fin.
